Despite the rain and muddy conditions, all three COFP squads came home with wins.
The weekend started with a rare tie ball game between the Scappoose Fireballs and the Avalanche 12U. The Avalanche got off to an early lead 9-3 by the bottom of the second, but the bats of the Fireballs would wake up and regain the lost ground. Tied 13-13 in the bottom of the 4th, both teams would be unable to score in the 5th and time would expire.
The 12U went into their next game against the Montesano Bulldogs with #17 Mackenzie G in the circle. The Avalanche would maintain a commanding lead through all 5 1/2 innings of the game to emerge with an 11-6 victory over the Bulldogs.
On Sunday, #24 Sophia W would score the first home-run of the season for the Avalanche in a disappointing loss to the Lake Oswego Renegades. The game remained close all the way and a tough call at home plate would deny the Avalanche advancement to the semifinal.
In the last game for the Avalanche, #11 KB B would pitch her first no-hitter. The only run allowed would be from a bases loaded walk in the 11-1 victory. Ava P was able to record her first home run of the season along with a 3B and 1B for a perfect 3 for 3 at bat.
Meanwhile in Newberg, the 10U squad got their first taste of tournament play against the Fusion. The two teams battled through 4 innings, with the decision going to the Fusion 16-8 in the end.
Undeterred, the 10U girls would fight back in their second game against the Shooting Stars, landing at a 10-9 advantage at the top of the third inning when the bats would wake up big time. A double by #2 Courtanie H, 2 walks and 4 singles would put 5 more runs across the plate for a decisive 15-9 victory over the Stars.
The 10U would drop their Sunday games to the Sherwood Fireballs and a second meeting against the fusion, but no worries, there are more games to come and great plays to be made!
The 14U had a terrific weekend with a 3 game sweep at the Aires Apparel Invitational. After a rain-out on Saturday, the 14U squad was primed for action and they did not disappoint. #52 Lena Z would pitch a shut-out through four innings before the Rampage Platinum would score their only run of the game. It wouldn’t be enough as the Avalanche was sitting on three at the top of the 5th and walked away with a hard fought victory.
In the second game of the day, the Voodoo Dollz would give everyone a start with a 4-0 in the top of the first inning. #22 Emily K would put a hush on the Dollz with a lead off Home Run to bring the score 4-1 at the end of the first. From there on out it was solid play by the Avalanche to put runners in scoring position and execute hits to get the home. When the dust settled, the Avalanche came out on top with a 5-4 victory and a chance at playing for the tournament title.
In the final game of the tournament, the bats of the Avalanche would tame the Oregon wild with 12 hits that would lead to decisive victory 9-4. #52 Lena Z would go 3-4 and hit 3 doubles for 2 RBIs.
What a great weekend for our girls from Central Oregon. A big thanks goes out to our coaches for consistently improving the quality of our club. Go Avalanche!
